Homecoming weekend! William and Mary Rowing spent a busy Homecoming Saturday doing their best to promote school spirit and raise $ for the Boathouse campaign. The team had a wonderful time erging 5000 meters each (yeah erging!), selling WMRC Boathouse raffle tickets and clothing to alums, rocking out in the team’s Homecoming Parade Float, and enjoying a resurgent Tribe football team lay waste to JMU. All in all, the team raised over $2000 for their Boathouse fund.
The following day, the team traveled across the mighty James River to Norfolk, Virginia to race at the Head of the Lafayette, with a full contingent of novice rowers quite excited for their first regatta! (unfortunately for the novice rowers, due to a lack of a novice category, they were forced to race against varsity and novice competition in an ‘Open’ category)
The team performed very well, in spite of (at times) gale force winds, which shortened the regatta’s race course from 5000 meters to 2500 meters. But no matter!
The men placed 1st, 3rd, 4th in the Open Men category, crushing their competition from Old Dominion University and Liberty University. The women faced stiffer competition from the strong varsity program from Old Dominion, placing 4th, 6th, 7th, but going undefeated against all other club teams. The novice men also placed 3rd in the Open Men 4+, the varsity women placed 1st in the Open Women 4+, and a mixed varsity boat placed 1st in the Open Mixed 8+ event.
Congratulations to the team for a successful regatta and weekend!
