The Friends of Tribe Rowing was founded in 1993 by parents of rowers as a booster and alumni organization for Tribe Rowing, also known as the William and Mary Rowing Club. Tribe Rowing was founded in 1985 and is a team of men and women who have represented the College of William and Mary at regattas throughout the nation. For more information about WMRC, please visit their website.
FTR is comprised of many former William and Mary rowers and we maintain a strong relationship with Tribe Rowing. In the past, FTR has disbursed funds to Tribe Rowing for shells, oars, miscellaneous equipment, dock repair and the Tack Family boathouse. Current and past major fundraising initiatives include:
- The Tack Family Boathouse at Chickahominy Riverfront Park.
- The WMRC Endowment Fund – a long-term fund designed to support Tribe Rowing in perpetuity.
Previously, FTR also supported rowing in the broader community of Williamsburg, VA, specifically through the Williamsburg Boat Club (WBC). WBC has experienced fantastic growth and was able to formalize their own 501(c)(3) status in 2015. Now that WBC is a non-profit, FTR has refocused its mission on Tribe Rowing, but still is a proponent of all types of rowing in Williamsburg!
